For most people, pets are not only companion animals, but an important and fundamental part of their family because they spend most of the time by their side, share experiences, adventures and there are even times when they grow up together . That is why losing them is extremely painful, especially when it is at the hands of a ruthless being as in the case of the dog Tita.
The case of this beloved mound reached the courts, changing the perception of domestic animals and getting a judge in Argentina to recognize her as a “non-human daughter” of a “multispecies family”.
In March 2020, the police officer Elías carried out a control and hygiene measures tour at the Playa Unión de Rawson beach resort, in the province of Chubut, Argentina, where he came face-to-face with a dog named Tita.
Everything seemed to be going well, until the officer shot the animal, which caused the instant death of the mound and, in turn, unleashed a wave of conflicts, as the officer alleged that he did so in self-defense after an unexpected attack by part of can. However, Tita’s family knew that this could not be true, as she always maintained a docile and gentle compartment.
Tita lived with Marianella Castillo and Maximiliano Muñoz, a couple with two children and three more pets. When their dog was killed, they demanded justice, taking the case to court. During the trial, Judge Gustavo Daniel Castro found the officer guilty, condemning him to one year in prison and suspension of two years of service without pay.
But that is not all. For the first time and in court, the judge recognized the dog Tita as a “non-human daughter” of a “multispecies family”, completely changing the perspective towards companion animals and showing that they too deserve respect.
Today the animal is no longer a thing, it is a sentient being with the right to have life respected. That is why we cannot affirm so lightly that the interest and physical integrity of a person is above the interest of life of an animal. Tita’s death has caused her family an irreparable loss. Castillo and Muñoz’s testimonies showed Tita’s integration into family life, transforming herself into a multispecies family.
