Justin Timberlake has apologized to Britney Spears after Framing Britney Spears generate criticism about his treatment of the singer during and after their relationship. In some of the videos shown in the documentary, Timberlake can be seen talking about his sex life with the singer.
In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Timberlake said he felt deeply sorry and willing to take responsibility for his actions. He also apologized to Janet Jackson for turning her back on him after his scandalous performance at the 2004 Super Bowl.
I have seen the messages, tags, comments and questions, and I want to respond. I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, when I spoke out of place or did not speak up for what was right. I know that I took advantage of these moments, and many others, and benefited from a system that forgives misogyny and racism.
I want to specifically apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson because they are two women that I admire and respect, and I know that I have failed them. I also feel a responsibility to answer, in part, because everyone involved deserves better and, most importantly, because this is a conversation that goes far beyond this situation and I want to learn from it.
The industry is damaged. It promotes men, specifically white men, to succeed. It is designed this way. As a man of privileged position I must speak out on this issue. In my ignorance, I didn’t recognize it for what it was, but I don’t want to benefit again at the expense of others.
I have not been perfect handling this situation throughout my career. I know that this apology is the first step and does not absolve me of the past. I want to take responsibility for my actions and be part of a world that supports others. I care very much about the well-being of the people I love and have loved. I can do better and I will.
After her career rose to stardom in the 1990s, Spears said she was waiting until she was married to lose her virginity. But after his breakup with the pop princess, Timberlake publicly revealed in a radio interview that he had had relationships with her.
Two years later, he and Janet Jackson performed at the Super Bowl halftime event, where she accidentally showed one of her breasts. Although both artists apologized, Jackson was the only one affected, being blocked and censored from the entertainment world, while Justin decided to ignore the situation completely.
Interest in Spears’ life has regained popularity after the New York Times will release a documentary that carefully examines the way the singer has been treated throughout her career. This has also caused criticism towards other personalities such as Diane Sawyer and Perez Hilton for contributing to the harassment and exploitation of their public image.
The tape also talks about the details about Britney’s legal process against her father to try to regain control of her career and finances. However, a few days ago this case took a surprising turn by removing some of Jamie Spears’ legal control over her daughter, thus giving Britney the opportunity to at least manage her own money.
