The Rio de Janeiro Marathon takes place the day after the Half Marathon. The tests mark the resumption of major sporting events in the city, after the pandemic.

During the test, despite the authorization to not use masks in open places and without crowding, it was possible to observe some people with face protection.

Rio already has more than 75% of the total population vaccinated with two doses or a single dose against the coronavirus. To participate in the competition, the athletes needed to be with a complete vaccination cycle by November 1st or to present a negative test for Covid-19 until 48 before removing the kits from competitors.

The start took place in seven platoons, to avoid crowding. The elite runners were the first to start the race, at 5 am. The route was 42.195 km, leaving at Aterro do Flamengo, heading towards the city center. Participants visited the Pracinhas Monument, Praça XV, Museum of Tomorrow, Boulevard Olímpico, AquaRio, Ferris Wheel, Rua Primeiro de Março, MAM.

Unlike previous years, this time the route did not pass through the Rio450 Tunnel. The race went to Copacabana and Ipanema until making the turn at the end of Leblon beach, returning towards the Aterro, also passing through Leme on the way back.

According to the organization of the Marathon, a total of 20,114 athletes registered for the events, 101 (0.5%) of which were foreigners, 6,470 (32%) from outside the State of Rio de Janeiro and 13,543 (67%) from Rio de Janeiro.

Impact on the economy

With the acceleration of vaccination and the resumption of large-scale events, the economy of the city and the state is in full swing and is trying to recover from the damage caused by the pandemic. According to data from the Brazilian Association of Hotels in Rio de Janeiro (ABIH-RJ), the city’s hotel chain has 95% occupancy, this period being the best long holiday of 2021 for the sector.
