The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, paid an official visit to Albania, and met today, Friday, May 13th, in Tirana with the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, and the Minister of Environment, Mirella Kumbaro.
The focus of Mr. Skrekas’ meetings was the developments in the international energy markets, the strengthening of the bilateral cooperation in energy and the environment and the interest of Greek companies for investments in the neighboring country.
Meeting with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy
The Minister of Environment and Energy informed the Prime Minister and the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of the neighboring country about the new natural gas infrastructures that will be implemented in Greece, which will triple the country’s LNG storage capacity.
He noted that these projects will strengthen regional energy security and contribute to the dependence on imports of Russian fossil fuels. The meetings also discussed the acceleration of the implementation of the new electricity interconnection that will triple the quantities of electricity circulating between the two countries.
Mr. Skrekas stressed that there will be multiple benefits from the development of a new high voltage line, between Southern Albania and Western Greece, which will ensure more efficient cross-border electricity flows and better integration of Renewable Energy Sources in the electricity network.
Meeting with the Minister of Environment and Tourism
In his meeting with the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Mirella Kumbaro, the new era in the cooperation of the two countries in the environment was sealed, after the activation of the Agreement for the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Prespa Park. As the Greek minister underlined, next month targeted actions will begin for the protection of biodiversity and the integrated management of water resources in the ecosystem of Prespa. The protection of the Aoos River, one of the few wild-flowing rivers in Europe with more than 1,000 different species of fauna, was also discussed.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, stated: “We discussed with the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy and the Minister of Environment and Tourism of Albania issues of mutual interest and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation. In this extremely critical situation for the whole of Europe, The deepening of our energy cooperation is a factor of security and stability for the wider Balkan region and helps to ensure the adequacy of supply. We want to accelerate the tripling of the capacity of the interconnection between the two countries and for this reason we hope that by the end of the year the two Electricity Transmission Operators will have reached the technical specifications of the project.
Last summer, with the big heat waves that hit our country, the imports of electricity from Albania were crucial in meeting the increased demand. We also discussed the strategic gas infrastructure that will be implemented in Greece, which will strengthen regional supply adequacy and contribute to the dependence on imports of Russian fossil fuels. I assured my counterparts that Greece will continue to provide know-how and support Albania in completing energy markets. “We also had the opportunity to exchange views on bilateral cooperation on environmental issues, which has now entered a new era with the activation of the Agreement on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the valuable ecosystem of Prespa.”
