K. Skrekas: Support is also coming for households with natural gas

According to the Bruegel institute, Greece is the first among EU member countries in supporting housewives with subsidies reaching 3.6% of the country’s GDP, Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas told SKAI.

He noted that €1.2 billion of the September subsidy will come from the new mechanism for recovering excess revenues from power companies, which go into the Energy Transition Fund and are then given to subsidize households.

Mr. Skrekas emphasized that the government has pledged to recover from 80% to 90% of the electricity increase in households and businesses. Especially for the month of September, we absorb – he said – 94% of the increase in electricity for households.

He even explained that a household in the month of September with a bill of 315 euros after the subsidy will pay less than 60 euros.

The Minister of Energy emphasized that as long as necessary there will be support against this explosive increase in energy prices.

When asked if there will be a cap on natural gas, he replied: “Little by little, our European partners are coming and agreeing to the proposal of Mitsotakis, who proposed early on to establish a cap on natural gas on the international stock markets. On September 7, at the General Directorate of Energy, the Greek representative will present the country’s position on limiting the price of natural gas and establishing a ceiling”.

Regarding the possibility of intervention to support the 700,000 households that use natural gas, he said that “the prime minister’s order is to examine scenarios for supporting households, because we cannot let them not be able to heat their homes in the heart of winter”.

When asked what form the intervention will take, he answered by saying that “last year we supported households with aid and with an increased heating allowance, but also through subsidies through natural gas bills”.

He added, however, that everything will be decided after consultations with the financial staff and after taking into account the needs of the most vulnerable social groups.

For the “Change Device” program, Mr. Skrekas emphasized that the beneficiaries from 150,000 may reach 220,000 through the subsidy for the runners-up.
