Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex and Princess Charlotte paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II through symbolic choices of jewelry used on Monday (19).
The Princess of Wales paid tribute to the Queen with a pearl necklace and earrings, which is the same set she wore at the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, Philip. The jewelry set belonged to the queen, who is believed to have loaned the necklace and earrings to Kate for the first time in 2017.
The Princess of Wales was photographed wearing the necklace at the Queen’s 70th wedding anniversary dinner. The Japanese choker has four rows of pearls and a central curved diamond clasp. Meanwhile, the pearl earrings are from Bahrain.
Pearls are traditionally worn as mourning jewelry – in part because of their colorless and unflattering appearance – in a tradition that was cemented during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Princess Diana also previously wore the ensemble during a state visit by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1982, and the Queen herself was photographed wearing the necklace and earrings in Bangladesh in 1983, according to the palace.
The brooch Princess Charlotte wore at the state funeral was a gift from great-grandmother Elizabeth II, Kensington Palace told CNN. The diamond brooch is small and horseshoe-shaped.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, wore discreet pearl earrings that were also a gift from the Queen, according to a Sussexes spokesperson.
Queen consort Camilla wore a gold and sapphire stone necklace and diamond earrings to the service. She was also wearing Queen Victoria’s Hesse Diamond Jubilee Brooch, which is shaped like an open heart and features two blue sapphire pendants.
