Kayky Brito: understand what polytrauma and head trauma are

The delegate, Ângelo Lages, from the 16th DP, where the accident was recorded, told the CNN that Kayky had “multibody trauma and head trauma”.

Kayky’s sister, actress Sthefany Brito, published on social networks that he is in the Intensive Care Center (CTI), with a stable condition and will undergo new tests this afternoon: “Only after these will we have new information.”

What is bodily polytrauma?

In an interview with CNN, Doctor Milton Steinman, a surgeon on the Trauma team at Albert Einstein Hospital, explained that the term “polytrauma” is often misapplied.

“Technically, the correct name would be multisystem trauma, from which it is assumed that at least two segments are affected. For example, head trauma in association with chest trauma or limb fractures.”, he explained.

According to the specialist, this situation usually happens after a “transmission of a large amount of kinetic energy”, such as being run over at high speed by cars, motorcycles and even bicycles. He said it’s important to know the victim’s initial state at the scene of the accident.

“The patient should preferably be admitted to a trauma center that has all the physical and human resources, in addition to having a multidisciplinary team led by a trauma surgeon. The prognosis depends on a combination of factors, in particular, related to the severity of the lesions and their location”, concluded Steinman.

What is head trauma?

Head trauma refers to an injury specifically to the skull caused by the impact.

Neurosurgeon Fernando Gomes told the CNN that head trauma, or “cranioencephalic trauma”, is considered serious “when the patient is found in the scene where the trauma occurred without self-awareness, without contact with the external environment and without movement or spontaneous eye opening”.

He explained that, according to neurotraumatology, the first hour after the trauma is “decisive”.

“The direct injury, caused by the impact, you cannot change, you cannot go back. But all secondary injuries, resulting from the evolution of the trauma itself, can be minimized if the individual is quickly subjected to adequate treatment”, reported the professor at the Faculty of Medicine of USP (FMUSP).

The appropriate treatment in question, according to Gomes, involves “mainly oxygenation of all brain tissues, maintenance of blood pressure and if there is a need to remove acute traumatic injuries, such as, for example, the evacuation of a hematoma”.

He said controlling intracranial pressure “is critical.”

“Once this moment of brain storm has passed, which generally lasts from five to seven days after the accident, then a rehabilitation phase begins in which the neurons that were not definitely damaged can recover again. And neuroplasticity itself can be triggered by rehabilitation so that the patient has the best possible manifestation of the central nervous system (CNS) in contact with the environment, ”he concluded.

Kayky’s hit-and-run

Actor Kayky Brito was run over in Barra da Tijuca, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, and is hospitalized in serious condition.

According to the Fire Department, the car was run over on Avenida Lucio Costa, at number 4,700, at 1:08 am this Saturday (2).

Kayky, who is 34 years old, was taken to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in Leblon, in the south of the city. The hospital management informed the CNN that the state of health of the actor is considered serious.

“He is in the CTI (Intensive Care Center), his condition is stable and will undergo further tests this afternoon. Only after the same will we have new information ”, published his sister, Sthefany Brito, on social networks.

According to the police chief, Kayky was at Quiosque Dona Maria, at post 6, on Barra beach, with friends, including actor Bruno De Luca. He had gone to his car to get some belongings.

Kayky was run over by an app driver, in a Fiat Argo car, which was with a passenger with a baby and was coming from Recreio dos Bandeirantes to Barra da Tijuca.

The delegate stated that the driver even tried to divert to the right lane, but ended up hitting the actor who was returning to the kiosk.

Expertise was requested at the scene and the police are investigating whether the driver was traveling at a speed higher than the speed allowed on the stretch.

The case was registered in the 16th PD as culpable bodily injury, when there is no intention.

The State Secretariat of Military Police reported that police officers from the 31st BPM responded to the incident. “The driver was taken to the 16th DP and to the IML to carry out a blood alcohol test, which was negative for drinking alcohol,” the PM said in a note.

The Civil Police informed in a note to the CNN that “diligence is being carried out to clarify the facts”. Deputy Ângelo Lages said that images from the surrounding security cameras are being sought.
