Kerosene accumulates higher than that of gasoline and cooking gas this year

The growth in the price of airline tickets is directly linked to the rise in the price of fuel used in aircraft. A survey of the CNN based on data provided by the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) shows that aviation kerosene (QAV) registers an increase of 47.6% between January and October 2021.

This increase is already greater than the accumulated result for gasoline and cooking gas, which grew 43.4% and 36%, respectively, in the same period.

Due to the value of the QAV, aviation costs and the high dollar, the price of airline tickets rose 33.86% in October 2021, compared to the previous month, according to data released this Wednesday (10), in the Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA).

According to the economist at Fundação Getúlio Vargas André Braz, the rise in price is a reflection of the increase in fuel used by the airline industry and the constant rise in the price of the dollar.

“The airline industry is heavily dollarized, due to the fuel and types of service at the airports, and it’s an industry that was heavily affected by the pandemic. The price of fuel began to rise last year, when travel had not even returned. When the tourism sector started to function again, this increase began to be passed on to the final consumer later on”, he explains.

The president of the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear), Eduardo Sanovicz, confirmed the impacts of these factors on national aviation.

“These data show how Brazilian commercial aviation is impacted by costs in Brazil. In addition to the high QAV, which is the most economically inefficient item for airlines, we still have the challenge of successive record dollar rates against the real, as more than 50% of the airlines’ costs are dollarized,” he pointed out.

In addition to commercial flights, aviation is used to transport cargo. According to information from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global demand in the air cargo sector grew by 9.1% compared to September 2019, the period prior to the pandemic. However, according to André Braz, this category will also be affected in the future by the increase in fuel.

“Freights are guided by contract, which means that when the contract was signed, the price was different. In the future, when readjusted, the value will rise sharply. And when you don’t even remember the fuel, it will be there included in this contract. These effects end up being lasting”, he explains.
