Kiev suburb Irpin is now 80% under Ukrainian control, says mayor

Mayor of the Kiev suburb of Irpin, Oleksandr Markushyn said that the Ukrainian armed forces, territorial defense and local police “have 80% of the city under control”, which would mean a pullback of Russian forces in the region. Follow the war news live.

Markushyn told a Ukrainian network: “Our city is constantly being bombed. Very massively. They are attacking the residential area, multi-story buildings.”

Despite mass evacuations in recent weeks, Markushyn, who said his own home was destroyed on Wednesday, estimated that up to 6,000 people are still in Irpin and that small groups are being evacuated each day.

“About 4,000 people don’t want to leave the city. We help them with food and medical supplies,” she added.

National police said on Wednesday they were resuming work in Irpin, largely occupied by Russian forces. It was another possible sign that Ukrainian security forces are reclaiming territory around the capital Kiev.

Irpin, a suburb located northwest of Kiev, has seen weeks of fierce fighting and heavy bombing since the Russian invasion launched nearly four weeks ago.
