King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended a traditional ‘ava ceremony in Samoa on Thursday (24).
The ‘ava ceremony is an important Samoan ritual in which the ceremonial drink ‘ava, or kava as it is known elsewhere in the Pacific, is shared among officials and guests to mark an important occasion.
Charles and Camilla arrived in Samoa on Wednesday night (23) local time for a three-day visit following a six-day tour of Australia. In Samoa, he will be given the title of high chief and will attend a summit of Commonwealth nations, known as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Charles is the symbolic head of the British Commonwealth, and CHOGM will be attended by leaders and authorities from the 56 countries with roots in the British Empire.
