As stated on Sunday evening (24.09.2023), the Minister of Interior of Kosovo, Jellal Svekla, the situation has returned to calm within the monastery in the northern part of the country.
Almost thirty armed men had camped in the monastery for several hours after the death of a policeman.
“We regained control of this area, after several battles,” the Kosovar minister said during a press conference.
It is recalled that since midday on Sunday (24.09.2023), about thirty armed men had camped in the Orthodox monastery around the village of Bansko and had been surrounded by police forces.

Gunmen riding in armored vehicles stormed a predominantly Serb village in northern Kosovo, clashed with police and stormed a monastery.
Kosovo police said a police officer and three of the approximately 30 attackers were killed during a shootout around the village of Bansko.
Monks and pilgrims were locked inside the Serbian Orthodox monastery’s church as the siege raged for hours.
It is unclear who is behind the violence, but Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Interior Minister Jellal Svekla have blamed “Serbian-sponsored criminals”.
