A Kremlin spokesman said on Friday that lower oil prices will not help end the conflict in Ukraine, as there is no connection between the two. The statement comes after comments made by US President Donald Trump on Thursday (23) during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“No. This conflict does not depend on oil prices, ”said Dmitry Peskov.
The spokesman also rejected Trump’s statement that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is ready to negotiate, stating that Zelensky “cannot be ready for an agreement,” as he, by decree, was banned from negotiating with Putin.
“To reach an agreement, negotiations are essential, and Zelensky banned them,” Peskov said, referring to the decree signed by the Ukrainian leader in October 2022 who declared the “impossibility of maintaining negotiations with Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin” .
Speaking to global government and business leaders gathered in Davos, Trump asked foreign oil producers to help reduce energy prices, arguing that the cheapest oil would help to end up in Ukraine, which Russia partially funded through of their oil recipes.
The price of oil is defined by global markets, although it is influenced by the amount of oil pumped by Saudi Arabia and other large producers. The organization of oil exporting countries (OPEC) has sustained prices restricting production. OPEC competes directly with the US oil industry, whose support helped elect Trump.
“If the price [do petróleo] Felling, the Russian-Ucrania war would be finished immediately, ”said Trump. “Right now, the price is high enough for the war to continue.”
