Rio de Janeiro breaks record and seizes 732 rifles in 2024

Rio de Janeiro recorded 732 rifle seizures in 2024, an average of two per day, according to data from the Public Security Institute (ISP), linked to the state’s Public Security Secretariat, released this Friday (24).

According to the government of Rio de Janeiro, the number represents an increase of 20% compared to 2023, when 610 rifles were seized, and is the highest in the historical series that began in 2007.

The statistics released showed that the number of cell phone thefts increased in 2024, with 21,423 cases, compared to 15,496 in the previous year. The street robbery rate also grew and had 58,574 records, compared to 51,573 robberies in 2023.

Last year, police removed 6,150 firearms from the streets, an average of 17 per day. There were also 23,930 records of drug seizures, an average of 24 incidents per day. The government reported that 19,034 vehicles were recovered in 2024, approximately 52 per day.

Also according to ISP data, throughout 2024, 42,389 arrests and arrests were made, an increase of 14.7% compared to 2023 and an average of 116 per day. In addition to the flagrant acts, 13,866 arrest warrants were served, around 38 every 24 hours.

“It is important to highlight that most of these criminals have already been arrested several times, leading to endless police rework. We need to update the legislation, make it tougher, so that crime stops being an attraction”, stated the state governor, Cláudio Castro.

Another indicator with positive numbers was crimes against life. According to the government, from January to December 2024, there was a reduction of 11.1% compared to the same period in 2023.

If violent lethality crimes are observed, which include intentional homicide, bodily injury followed by death, robbery and death by State agent, there were 3,795 deaths in 2024. This number is the lowest for the period of one year since the beginning of the historical series in 1991.

The state of Rio de Janeiro recorded 2,930 intentional homicides last year, also the lowest number since 1991; and 669 deaths due to the intervention of State agents, the lowest number since 2015.
