Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday (11) that the Kremlin did not in fact like the way Vladimir Putin’s name was used in the debate between US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Peskov told reporters that Putin’s name was being used as part of the internal political struggle in the US and “we really, really don’t like that.”
He said the US was being hostile and negative towards Russia. The Kremlin’s hope is that candidates will stop making references to Putin.
Last week, the White House said Putin should stop commenting on the US election after he said, in an apparently tongue-in-cheek comment, that he would prefer Harris to Trump and that her “infectious” laugh was one reason why.
During the debate, former President Donald Trump said that he “knows Putin very well” and that “Russia would never (…) have entered Ukraine” during his presidency. Still on the subject of the war in Ukraine, Trump added: “I’m going to do it before I even become president,” claiming that his election would redefine the geopolitical situation and, almost by definition, herald a deal.
Harris, in turn, used the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to attack Trump due to his predilection for strongmen and international despots.
“It’s well known that these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again,” Harris said, “because it’s very clear that they can manipulate you with flattery and favors.”
