Labor violations involving floods already account for 1/3 of complaints in May

Records of labor violations related to floods already account for almost a third of the complaints received in May by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) of Rio Grande do Sul.

According to a survey updated until this Monday (13), of the 203 complaints received this month, at least 60 refer to the floods that hit the municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul.

Most of the complaints concern reports of mandatory attendance at work even if the workplace is in a flooded region or considered a risk area.

More than 83% of complaints are concentrated in Porto Alegre. In Pelotas, there are also records of workers being forced to show up for work based in Laranjal, one of the neighborhoods most affected by the floods.

The MPT has already recommended to the Federation of Municipal Associations of Rio Grande do Sul (Famurs) that municipalities issue a free certificate of direct exposure to flooding for workers in this situation.

The document would be a way to prove that the worker was affected by the floods and cannot attend work. The MPT has also guided employers to prioritize measures that guarantee employees' income.

The deadlines in procedures involving labor irregularities related to the public calamity” were not suspended. Reports must be made online, via the MPT website.
