In an interview with CNN Radio on CNN no Plural, psychologist Roberto Debski stated that minorities, such as blacks and those belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community, have factors that worsen the mental health of this group.
“We already see mental health with great fragility in these times of pandemic, it has worsened, but, for minorities, this goes further”, he said.
The psychologist highlights that they often have problems with self-esteem, validation and even self-prejudice.
“The lack of support combined with all these factors act as aggravating factors for mental health, impacting data on depression, anxiety and suicidality”, he added.
Debski defended that it is “fundamental to make people aware of the issue”, as in the Yellow September campaign.
“The idea that not talking about it, otherwise it will increase the number of cases, is actually the opposite.”
According to him, “the more awareness and as we work with prejudice, we educate people and find those who are in this vulnerable situation.”
The specialist believes that it is important to observe the signs that people give, aggressive or withdrawn behavior.
“We should not judge or criticize people, because that makes the situation worse, but welcome and listen”, he reinforced.
