Latvia closes border crossing with Belarus – Migration flow increases

Her government Latvia decided today to close one of its two border crossings with the Belarus in an effort to prevent irregular migrationas reported by Latvian news agency LETA and LSM network.

Staff from the Silene border station will be deployed to guard the border with Latvia’s border guard chief speaking of the “tenseest situation since 2021” due to the influx of migrants from Belarus. The guards paused 894 people who tried to cross the border in the last six days, bringing the total number for September to 1,773, according to LETA and as reported by APE-MPE.

In 2021, Latvia, Poland, and Lithuania were faced with a migration crisis when thousands of people, mostly from the Middle East and Africa, began crossing into their territories from Belarus.
