Western leaders must “look at their own consciences” before accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of war crimes, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.
The Russian foreign minister added that the Russian mission to the United Nations would hold a press conference later Monday to provide “detailed material to show the true nature of the events in Bhutan”, stressing that Western and Kiev’s accusations of killing civilians in northern Ukraine is false.
Asked specifically about US President Joe Biden’s comments, Lavrov stressed that the West must first look at its own actions in Iraq and Libya. “Americans do not have a clear conscience …” he said.
Earlier, Joe Biden accused the Russian president of war crimes and called for a trial, intensifying the global outcry over the killing of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Butsa, following the revelation of new photos showing the magnitude of the atrocities there.
The US president’s harsh comments were prompted by the discovery of a mass grave and several handcuffed corpses that had been shot at close range in the city of Butsa, outside Kyiv, which had recently been abandoned by Russian troops.
These revelations, in fact, have increased the possibility that the United States and the European Union will proceed to impose new sanctions against Moscow.
The Kremlin has categorically denied the allegations of killing civilians, with the city of Bucharest in particular pointing out that the mass grave and street corpses are a “scene” set by the Ukrainians to tarnish the Russian military.
