The visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is a deliberate attempt by Washington to irritate China, the Russian Foreign Minister said today Sergey Lavrov. “I find no other reason for them to cause such disturbance almost out of nowhere knowing full well what this means for the People’s Republic of China,” Lavrov said from Myanmar, where he is visiting.
Pelosi’s visit yesterday, Tuesday, to Taiwan, which China considers a breakaway province, provoked an angry reaction from Beijing at a time when there are already international tensions due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia has offered its support to China, with which it has forged a strong partnership in recent years, and has warned Washington that Pelosi’s visit puts it on a collision course with Beijing.
Both Moscow and Beijing support the principle of “One China” recognizing Taiwan as part of China and oppose the island’s independence.
Lavrov also said the U.S. has made no effort to restart talks on a new strategic nuclear arms reduction agreement that would replace the 2011 treaty, called New START, Reuters reports. the Athens News Agency.
US President Joe Biden has said he is ready to “quickly negotiate a new arms control framework” to replace New START when it expires in 2026, while President Vladimir Putin recently said there can be no winners in a nuclear war.
“They have a habit of announcing things from the microphone and then forgetting about them,” Lavrov said. “There have been no approaches to us to restart the negotiation process,” he added.
