Manfred Weber, president of the European People’s Party (EPP), said his group will aim to isolate far-right parties from any government coalition.
Speaking after projections indicated that the EPP, the party of Ursula Von Der Leyen, president of the European Commission, remains the largest political group in Brussels, Belgium, Weber made an appeal for other parties to join the “pro-European alliance, pro-democratic party of the PPE.”
“The European People’s Party is among the founding fathers and mothers of today’s European Union,” said Weber.
“We created today’s Europe and that is why all those who want to destroy our Europe are our enemies and we will fight against them. We will not allow them to have any kind of influence at the European level.”
The EPP counts 13 heads of state and government among its members, including Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
