New chapter in the military training of Leonor of Spain. The princess, the king’s eldest daughter Felipe VI and the queen JoyEnsign at the Naval Academy of Pontevedra, embarked on the training ship on Wednesday 8 January Juan Sebastián de Elcanoa four-masted schooner launched in 1928 on which she will remain six months.
The military training of the heir to the Spanish throne continues, and after a year in the Land Army he will spend another in the Navy. The daughter of Felipe VI and Letizia Ortiz is following the same path as her father when she was her age. In January, just like he did, he will board the Academy’s training ship, where he will stay for six months
A moment full of emotion for the heir to the throne and his classmates (a total of 75 students including 9 girls), who will spend a few days on the ship, moored in Cadiz, before setting sail on Saturday 11 January. The king and queen will also be there to witness the departure, as well as the families of the other students. First, however, a solemn rite: the boys will go to the church of Santo Domingo to get the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, known as La Galeona. It is tradition that the statue accompanies the journey of the midshipmen, to protect them. Upon their return to their homeland it will return to its place.

Training on board the naval vessel will almost always be en route: the route will touch different countries for a total of 17 thousand miles. The Elcano will first head towards the Canary Islands, and then cross the Atlantic. Among the stages there are Montevideo, Punta Arenas, Valparaíso, Panama, Santo Domingo and New York, last foreign city in which the ship will dock before embarking on the return to Spain, scheduled for 21 July.

An experience that will certainly be unforgettable for the princess, as her father wished her on January 6, a date which in Spain coincides with Pascoa Militar, i.e. the beginning of the military year. The king, who embarked on the Elcano in 1987, defined that journey as “among my best memories of military training”. And again: «The sea is an endless learning experienceso we wish you, dear Leonor, that you and your fellow midshipmen take advantage of the knowledge and experience that this journey offers you, because it will continue to be valid for you, as it was valid for me, throughout your life.”
After returning to Spain and the summer holidays, the princess will have the last year of military training ahead of her, which will be in Murcia, home of the General Air Force Academy. An obligatory path for Leonor, who when she ascends the throne will assume the title of Captain General of the royal armed force and supreme commander, the same held today by Felipe VI.
