Let’s do like Sylvie from Emily in Paris, who shows the over 50s the chic way to change their look

If once life began at 40, today it is to turn one’s destiny upside down aka wardrobe there is no age limit. Is 50 the new 30? We prefer to say that age really is just a number and having style doesn’t depend on the candles on the cake: the navigator, in every area, can really be reset at any time.

So, do we want to start a year marked by a renewal starting from the image? Good news for over 50: you’re lucky because 2022 gave a character at the end who, albeit fictional, gives the motivation and real #inspofashion to jump into a extreme make over to the bold and chic look.

Let’s talk about Sylvie Grateau that in the third season of Emily in Paris (available on Netflix) upgrades both professional and private. And, of course, sartorial too. Played by Gorgeous Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, 59 years old, personality to spare and physique to scream, is the personified representation of the concept of “cool without effort” (which is the secret of the wardrobe of every Parisian worthy of the name). After the outfits reduced to an essential color palette, albeit embellished with bold jewels, which we admired in the first two series, Sylvie’s wardrobe takes a turn for the worsebecoming increasingly whimsical and colorful.

SPOILER: All this coincides with the abandonment of Savoir and the birth of his marketing agency, Grateau as she reconnects with her husband with whom she no longer lived with but with whom she had never divorced.

This existential revolution leads her to do a refresh in her wardrobe which, while retaining the power and tres chic DNA, moves up a level in audacity, grit and sensuality. Her looks switch towards strong colors, just like her who had the courage to start from scratch on various fronts. In love, French and very glamorous, through Sylvie Grateau, for us the best dressed of Emily in Paris 3here’s one guide for an over 50 look change in 7 points.

1. Play with accessories

A charming apostrophe between elegance and seriousness, and it is immediately style galore. Without losing authority, even to go to work you can make it clear who is in charge without being too much and at the same time emerging from anonymity with little chic pluses. Therefore, in perfect balance between discreet luxury and sensualityperhaps unbutton an extra button on the blouse and wear, without overdoing it, maxi jewels or, like Sylvie does in the photo, add a coral-print belt that gives a surprising touch to the white trench coat.

2. Dare necklines (or miniskirts)

Deep V-neck pullovers and tops, open shirts and wrap-front dresses add a subtly sexy edge to the ensemble. On the other hand, more modest necklines such as high-neck silk shirts give a sophisticated element to looks, Sylvie docet. Like her, we almost always rely on the old school fashion rule of show the décolleté or legs, so as not to go too far. Daring yes, but always with good taste.

3. Wear total black, but never take it for granted

An all-black suit can be anything but sober, offering the eye an example of elegant and sophisticated style, as casual as it is elegant. However, to really make a head-to-toe black look pop, it is necessary to study the details well. Better to add deep and unwashed blacks to your wardrobe and play with details and silhouettes, as Sylvie does at the event of her designer friend Pierre Cadault with a dress that we would look great on a villains of Gotham City. Important: total black, to have an impact, you need to show it off every now and then, not every day.

4. Liven up key pieces for the job

Embracing the dopamine tendency, Sylvie pairs a plum blazer with a red button-down shirt and, of course, matching carmine-rimmed sunglasses with purse, in one of her best looks from Season 3. Whether it’s a striped shirt and pants or a blazer and skirt, Sylvie’s workwear is hands down our favorite over any TV character. Inspired by the typical French girl style, her wardrobe is full of sharp lines and highly structured pieces, worn in a way that feels comfortable and trendy, not stiff. She greenlights combo jackets with straight-leg jeans and loafers, white shirts with high-waisted pants. Then a snug midi skirt is inevitable, ready to accompany everyone on a myriad of occasions and appointments.

5. Don’t be afraid of printed dresses with body-hugging silhouettes

Unsurprisingly, Sylvie opted for an impossibly chic 2015 Vivienne Westwood piece like this one when snapping her corporate presentation photos. A dress that highlights the silhouette with the right and measured, but obviously trendy print, it also instantly generates the right attitude to wear it. Seeing is believing.

6. Focus on trend topic garments on social networks

Who says TikTok isn’t a country for overs? No extra candle on the cake can put the trend in a corner: just make it your own. For this, don’t you find that the black and white striped blazer that Sylvie wears is in perfect Wendsdaycore aesthetic?

7. Add a touch of Emily to your wardrobe

In one of her most memorable and vibrant looks from Season 3 of Emily in Paris, Sylvie combines an orange silk blouse by Maison Rabih Kayrouz with a gathered skirt on the front in magenta nuances and fabulous metallic fuchsia stiletto heeled knee-high boots by Alexandre Vauthier (which the actress herself kept to herself and flaunted in a couple of public engagements). A color block and vitamin look that we would have seen well even on Emily herself whose style choices have slowly peeped into those of Sylvie. At any age, then, adding positive vibes to our taste of an energetic wardrobe it is fashionable and right. For bold, yet unique and always classy outfits.
