Libya: Foreign Minister relieved of her duties

Libyan Foreign Minister Nila Al-Mangous was fired on Saturday and banned from traveling, a spokesman for the Presidential Council told the media.

The presidency has launched an “investigation into administrative misconduct”, spokeswoman Naila Wahiba told Libya Panorama on Saturday.

According to the electronic media El-Marsad, Al-Mangous, close to General Haftar, a powerful man in eastern Libya, allegedly made foreign policy decisions without consulting the Presidential Council.

The spokeswoman confirmed the authenticity of a document circulating on social media and ordered the dismissal of Al-Mangou from her duties because she was pursuing a foreign policy without coordination with the Council.

According to a decree signed by the Presidential Council, “a committee of inquiry has been set up under the chairmanship of Abdallah Alafi, Vice-President of the Presidential Council”. The committee must submit its report within 14 days at the latest.

The dismissal and travel ban were decided against Mangou a few days before an international conference on Libya was held in Paris.

The conference scheduled for November 12th is expected to prepare for the December 24th presidential election, which will be followed by parliamentary elections a month later.

These elections are expected to end a decade of chaos in the country after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
