Today, August 4, the management of NIO NextEV Limited, one of the largest car manufacturers in China, has registered a new subsidiary called Nio Mobile Technologies. From the name of the new venture, you can guess what the created team will do – the trademark registration documents indicate that this company will develop, manufacture and sell various electronic products, including mobile devices, wearable electronics and communication devices. What’s more, it’s worth noting that Nio Mobile Technologies was listed with a hefty $100 million in start-up capital – pretty good for an up-and-coming player in the segment.
Also, the documentation of the new company indicates that it will develop software and hardware for devices based on artificial intelligence, but there are no details in this direction – it is not entirely clear what devices and for which market segment we are talking about. Moreover, the management of the new NIO NextEV Limited division decided not to reinvent the wheel, but to follow the example of successful players in the smartphone market – the head of the company noted that the team would act in the spirit of Apple, releasing its new gadgets once a year. For a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, this is really a big innovation – usually local brands literally bombard the market with gadgets.
At the same time, Nio Mobile Technologies has already stated that they plan to use all advanced technologies so that the user is not limited in functions and capabilities. For example, the company’s gadget will have access to mmW technology, which Apple does not have – it is actively used in Nio cars. And, of course, smartphones will be created in a style that vaguely resembles the company’s vehicles. Now it is difficult to imagine exactly how the manufacturer wants to implement this, but now the developers are talking about a single color palette – the user will be able to buy a car and a smartphone in the same color.
And given that the smartphone in conjunction with the car conditionally replaces the remote control, this may well be in demand. And although no one is now calling the exact release date of the new gadget, presumably the company’s first smartphone should appear next year at a price of less than a thousand dollars.
