Lily Safra: Billionaire Dies – Supported Parkinson’s Research and Helped Rebuild Notre Dame

The billionaire Lily Safra, widow of the banker Edmond Safra, died yesterday Saturday at the age of 87, as announced by the Edmond J. Foundation. Safra of which he was president.

“For more than 20 years, Safra has faithfully supported the philanthropic legacy of her beloved husband, Edmond, supporting hundreds of organizations around the world,” says the Foundation’s press release, according to APE – BPE.

Her funeral will take place tomorrow Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.

Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, she spent part of her life in Monaco and Geneva where she breathed her last.

She married Edmond Safra in 1976, from whom she inherited the fortune after his death in 1999 in the arson attack on their home in Monaco by his nurse – a crime that shocked public opinion at the time.

Known for her philanthropy, she had strongly supported the investigation against her Parkinson’s disease and other brain diseases.

He had also donated 10 million euros for its reconstruction of Notre Dame Cathedral the day after the devastating fire in 2019.
