Lisbon court authorizes extradition of Nelma Kodama, arrested for drug trafficking

The Lisbon Court of Appeal, in Portugal, authorized the extradition of Nelma Kodama, arrested in April after an operation against international drug trafficking. Nelma was even convicted in Operation Lava Jato.

“There is no obstacle or reason to prevent the granting of extradition and there is no nullity, violation of any legal rule,” said the court.

According to the Portuguese court, extradition is one of the forms of international cooperation in criminal matters.

“There is no unsuitability of the extradition request. The request by the Brazilian authorities complies with the formal requirements imposed by the Convention on Extradition of the Communities of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) and there are no grounds for refusing extradition by Brazil, the court adds.

In a note, the defense, represented by lawyer Santiago André Schunck, clarified that the extradition decision will not be carried out immediately, in view of the possibility of filing an appeal in Portugal, within the legal period of 10 days.

Nelma is investigated by the Federal Police as part of the Discovery operation, which investigates international drug trafficking between Brazil and Portugal.
