London to Security Council: Iran ‘very likely’ behind Mercer Street attack

The Iran reportedly used one or more unmanned aerial vehicles to carry out a deadly attack on a tanker last week off the coast of Oman, security Council Britain, Romania and Liberia.

“This attack disrupted and posed a threat to the safe passage and safety of international navigation and was a clear violation of international law,” the countries said in a letter to the 15-member council, which was seen by Reuters.

“This act should be condemned by the international community,” the letter added.

According to the Athenian Macedonian News Agency, Tehran denies any involvement in Thursday’s attack on the Liberian-flagged but Japanese-owned oil tanker Mercer Street, which is controlled by the Israeli company Zodiac Maritime.

A British and a Romanian member of the tanker’s crew were killed in the attack.

Diplomats say Britain is expected to raise the issue at a closed-door Security Council meeting in the coming days.

Focus on navigation safety

The Security Council is expected to discuss maritime security at a public meeting scheduled for Monday, chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chaired by the UN Security Council in August.

“The United Kingdom and Romania, together with regional and international partners, are conducting a detailed investigation into this attack. “We will inform the council in due course,” Britain, Liberia and Romania said in the same letter.

The United States and Britain announced on Sunday that they would work with their allies to respond to the attack.

“Israel will continue to take all necessary measures to protect its citizens,” Israel wrote separately to the UN Security Council.

“Iran’s growing aggression is endangering our region and beyond, and we expect the Security Council to take concrete and decisive action to mitigate this growing threat,” wrote Israeli Ambassador to the United States and the United Nations Gilad Erdan. .
