The 0.1% variation in retail sales in May compared to April was the fifth positive result in the year, but “it is noteworthy that this growth has been decreasing”, according to CM Capital economist Matheus Pizzani.
In an interview with CNN Radio he explained that the result for this month, released this Wednesday (13), by the IBGE shows the “perspective of what to expect for the rest of the year.”
The economist points out that the groups that had high, such as fuel and supermarkets, have been greatly affected by inflation.
“On the other hand, groups that could have performed better, such as furniture and appliances, had a drop.”
Although he says that it is better to have little growth than none, “given the importance of trade and services for GDP”, Matheus reinforces that “it is worrying to see such a low level in this period of the year.”
At the end of 2022, there is seasonality, with commemorative parties, which usually leverage the sector.
“But, in the meantime, it would be important to have a resumption for more significant growth and to improve the perspectives for the next year”, he added.
