Luca and Andrea: from Hawaii to Lapland, chasing the perfect shot

Luca and Andrea have been sharing that unpredictable journey that is life for 14 years. The first hairdresser, the second doctor, at a certain point they understand that their respective professional paths are no longer enough. The lure of travel, which for tourist purposes has always seen them with the suitcase ready, becomes more compelling and is tinged with a different color. For four years now, they have been carrying an extra baggage with them, the one that contains the equipment intended for travel photography professional. “We were on the Russian northern border and we were admiring a magnificent Northern Lights. We wanted a reminder of that experience that the cell phone alone could not give us »Luca tells us. So, they decide to equip themselves with a camera capable of capturing moments like that.

From there their journey into travel photography begins. It is not uncommon to come across a photograph that portrays a breathtaking landscape. Everything looks perfect, no smudges, the outlines are sharp, the light almost cinematic. But to imprison that fragment of reality in two-dimensionality requires a lot of time, a great deal of effort and meticulous study of the details. «A single shot can mean having to repeat a mountain climb several times with all the equipment. For a single photo we go back to the same place for several consecutive days. We get up at dawn maybe and have a very late dinner because until 9.30 pm we shoot with the sunset light. But the photos we take home also contain all this effort, which is an essential part of our experiences ».

Because a photograph must not only portray, but also tell a story, a unique experience of its kind. And Luca and Andrea have had different experiences of this type (see, for example, those immortalized in the beautiful photos of gallery).

Their main references are two sacred monsters of photography: David LaChapelle e Steve McCurry. «With the first, in particular, we also share the love for Hawaii, the place that most seduced us during our travels. Experiences lived have their own destiny. In fact, when we found ourselves sleeping on a remote beach in Hawaii it happened that LaChapelle saw our photo; later, I also had the honor of chatting about photography and experiences with him on various occasions »continues Luca.

In their shots stands the grandeur of nature. A very lively and lived-in nature: Luca returns with his presence the idea of places where it is possible to spend memorable moments. He is thus seen engaged in a «trekking of several days, immersed in the nature of the Hawaiian island of Kauai to reach the most fascinating beach in the world; or in a path of 3922 steps dating back to the Second World War that climb the crest of a mountain; or even in an exclusive experience on a private island in the middle of a lake in the center of Sweden ».

For Luca and Andrea, travel photography means first of all «capturing the essence of a place and bringing with us is the memory of a perhaps unrepeatable experience». For now, however, it is not their only professional horizon as they both continue to devote time to their respective jobs. But the collaborations, thanks to the charm of their shots, are increasing and their travels have not been interrupted even by the health emergency. “We make time for about one challenging trip a month to which we add closer destinations on weekends. We love intimate, private places where contact with nature reaches its maximum expression ».

The intention to make travel photography a full time job is there and for this they have created a dedicated company. They are aware that the path is still long but they have several projects in the pipeline, including that of a first photographic book.

And when we ask them what it is like to be a couple even in the professional context, they confess that «in the family it is easier to complain. But an unfiltered discussion can be an advantage and give rise to a much more shared vision of the project behind a photograph ».
