Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was impeached on Wednesday (7) after attempting a failed coup d’état. Hours before the country’s Congress voted on a motion that could depose the politician, he declared a state of exception and partially dissolved Parliament.
After the impeachment, Castillo was detained by the Peruvian National Police in Lima. The then deputy Dina Boluarte assumed the presidency this Wednesday.
In Brazil, opponents of elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) recalled a publication in which the petista congratulated the Peruvian after winning the 2021 elections.
At the time, Lula published a message on Twitter congratulating Castillo and stating that the result was “symbolic” and represented “yet another advance in the popular struggle in our dear Latin America”.
I want to congratulate @PedroCastilloTe for the important victory in Peru and salute the Peruvian people for free and democratic elections. The result of the Peruvian polls is symbolic and represents yet another advance in the popular struggle in our dear Latin America.
