President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) rules out going to Buenos Aires for Javier Milei’s inauguration in Argentina, on December 10, if he wins this Sunday’s elections (19).
Lula also does not intend to make a phone call to Milei congratulating him on his eventual victory, they told CNN assistants close to the PT member.
The tendency is for Lula to speak out on his social networks, congratulating the electoral process in Argentina and wishing Milei success, but without seeking immediate proximity to the opposition candidate, according to presidential advisors.
Milei has already called Lula a “communist” and “corrupt”, in addition to declaring that he does not intend to meet with the Brazilian president during his term. He also defended, in interviews, Argentina’s withdrawal from Mercosur.
At Palácio do Planalto, the order — in case of Milei’s victory — is “not to act to destabilize him, but neither to act proactively” to build bridges without first feeling the temperature of the type of relationship that the ultraliberal would like to have with Brazil .

One of the thermometers is knowing the degree of access that he, once in Casa Rosada, would grant to the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires and whether he would allow his ministers to establish contacts with Brazilian peers in each area.
In Planalto, Lula’s presence in a possible inauguration of Milei is completely ruled out, among other factors, due to the hostile scenario that the PT member would face among the Argentine’s supporters.

In case of victory for Peronist Sergio Massa, current Minister of Economy, the situation changes completely. Lula would not only like to speak to him right after the election results, but he insists on going to the inauguration on December 10th.
It is believed, in Itamaraty and Planalto, that President Alberto Fernández would invite Massa to also participate in the Mercosur summit scheduled for December 7th, in Rio.
Lula’s aides emphasize that it is important, as in the PT’s victory in 2022, to quickly speak out about the fairness of the electoral process and recognize Massa as president in order to avoid the growth of allegations of fraud and undue challenges to the result by Milei — this, obviously, if the process runs normally and there is no evidence of problems.
