M. Barvitsiotis to President of the UN Security Council: International law, the only answer to the revisionism and use of force

“Greece’s respect for international law is non-negotiable and is the only response to those who seek to overthrow the current security framework through revisions or the use of force,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis from New York. with the President of the United Nations Security Council, Lana Zeki Nusseibeh.

Their discussion took place on the day the Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Ukraine again and held a teleconference conference on Ms Nusseibeh’s coronavirus.

In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis pointed out that Greece is in favor of the peaceful settlement of disputes and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of independent states, while remaining firmly committed to international law, fully in line with the principles of the United States Charter.

For this reason, he said, Greece condemned from the outset the Russian invasion of Ukraine and any attempt to revise history and redraw the borders by authoritarian leaders.

In the same context, he added, Greece is responding to the Turkish provocation it faces, with reference to international law and the treaties it has signed, such as the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, UNCLOS.

“International law is a precondition for the peaceful coexistence of peoples and the consolidation of security in the Eastern Mediterranean region,” he said.

Mr. Varvitsiotis also raised the issue of the Greek minority in Mariupol, for which Greece is of particular interest, and expressed his concern for the safety of its members.

Finally, he informed the President of the UN Security Council about the candidacy of Greece for a position of non-permanent member in the UN Security Council for the period 2025-2026.
