M. Syregela: In 2022 the activation of the Innovation Center for women

Within 2022, the Innovation Center for women will start operating, in order to increase both the percentage of girls who turn to science and STEM studies, and the percentage of women in companies based on research and innovation.

This was stated to APE – MPE by the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in charge of Demographic Policy and Family, Maria Syregela, while next week a wide-ranging meeting will be held with representatives of relevant ministries, with other public and private sector actors from the field of research and academic community, employment and social organizations, with the National Chamber Network of Greek Women Entrepreneurs, and representatives of companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco to promote this initiative.

The initiative aims, on the one hand, at thematic cooperation between government and social actors and market participants, and, on the other hand, at their commitment that the adoption of technology and innovation will not increase social and economic inequality.

The Undersecretary noted that although in the EU our country is very low in the ranking of employed women-specialists in information and communication technologies, on the contrary it moves above the EU average for women with a degree in Science and Technology -Engineering-Mathematics (STEM).

It is recalled that according to a recent survey by diANEOsis “among the founders of startups, in Greece, the vast majority – 8 out of 10 – are men, an inequality observed in other European countries, which have, on average, a corresponding distribution among gender “.

The Innovation Center, therefore, will promote the substantial participation of women in the fields of technology, information technology, communications and in professions related to sciences such as mathematics and new technologies.

The establishment of the center will be based on the United Nations model for sustainable development, while there will be cooperation with the European Center for Women and Technology (ECWT), the European organization that helps to increase the number of women in Europe in STEM and start-up careers. technology ups and there will be transfer of know-how from the respective application in Norway.

The initiative aims, inter alia:

– In the planning of innovative actions that will enhance the attraction of more girls to STEM studies and will aim at increasing the participation rate of women in companies based on research and innovation.

– In the creation of a platform for the development of entrepreneurship that will be based on high technology, creating the conditions for equal participation in the new environment shaped by the constant evolution of technology and giving special emphasis to female talent.

– Assessing the impact of gender-based policies, using a data-driven approach.

As the Undersecretary has stated in the past: “The need for a joint effort through new approaches is now recognized by all, in order to address the shortage of women in the whole range of professional careers in the highly specialized fields and in the respective labor market.”
