M. Syregela: ‘We are creating a more digital economy’

“The creation of new jobs and the upgrading of the skills of the country’s workforce are among the priorities of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.” This was stated by Undersecretary of Labor and Social Affairs Maria Syregela, speaking at the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Union for the Mediterranean (Union for the Mediterranean) on the employment of vulnerable populations, especially young people and women, held in Morocco.

Ms. Syregela, who participated in a panel discussion on green and digital recovery, skills and innovation, stressed the important role of upgrading the digital and technological skills of young people and women, skills that serve as a powerful resource for the modern labor market. He spoke about the policies promoted by the Greek government to reduce the digital divide between the sexes and to retrain and upgrade the skills of human resources that are necessary for the future of work.

The “Green Jobs for Women” initiative supports the transition to a green economy by subsidizing the creation of 5,000 new jobs in companies with an emphasis on unemployed women, while the creation of the “Innovation Center for Women” promotes women’s research, innovation and entrepreneurship in Greece. Young girls are given the opportunities to choose professions related to new areas of high specialization, but also opportunities to finance business projects of Greek women who innovate.

During her speech, the Undersecretary also stressed that Greece last year achieved the highest rate of reduction of unemployment in the EU, creating during the pandemic more than 50 thousand new jobs, through the programs of DYPA (Public Employment Service, former OAED ), while this year another 86,000 new positions will be opened through the projects and actions planned and implemented by the ministry.

It is noted that the panel also included Andrea Orlando, Minister of Labor and Social Policy of Italy, Christos Ioannou, member of the Social Affairs Committee of Business Europe and Director of Employment and Labor Market of BSE and Mustapha Tlili, Executive Director Labor Unions.
