“We will never accept that Greece from being a sovereign country turns into a transit country for refugees and immigrants to the rest of Western Europe,” Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said speaking to the “SKAI” television station.
“Something like that would undermine our sovereign rights, our obligations under the Schengen treaty and the sense of security of Greek citizens,” he pointed out, saying the government has succeeded in reducing immigration flows, which was a pre-election pledge of the ND.
The deputy minister also underlined the need to ensure the national front against Turkish provocation, a front which “we should have to a higher degree”.
The 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Disaster, he noted, should have taught us that we should not uncritically accept Turkish propaganda as an element of division in the Greek political scene, pointing out with the occasion of the events in Evros, that some easily adopted all the elements of Turkish propaganda, which were refuted. He added that all parties should vote for the country’s international defense agreements and support moves to strengthen the military industry.
Regarding the issue of Turkish provocation, Mr. Varvitsiotis made it clear that it is not Greece that seeks escalation with Turkey but is determined to protect its sovereign rights. “We are not going to back down on this line,” he said.
