Macron briefed Bennett on his recent contacts with Putin

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke by telephone with French President Emmanuel Macron before leaving for Moscow this morning, as reported by the Elysee.

Macron briefed him on recent talks he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “They will remain in contact, with the aim of achieving a ceasefire, in coordination with German Chancellor Olaf Solz,” said a French presidency official.

In his three-hour meeting with Putin in the Kremlin, Bennett raised, among other things, the issue of the large Jewish community affected by the war in Ukraine.

The two leaders also discussed the ongoing talks between the major powers, including Russia, on the revival of the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. Israel opposes this development, while earlier today Russia expressed the view that sanctions against it hinder reaching an agreement with Iran. However, the State Department argues that sanctions against Russia are not related to the 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (JPCOA) and should not affect a possible revival.

It should be noted that on his trip to Moscow Bennett was accompanied by the Minister of Housing Zeev Elkin, who was born in Ukraine. Elkin has previously accompanied former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acted as an interpreter in his talks with Putin.
