France will resume construction of nuclear reactors to ensure its energy independence and meet its climate targets, Emanuel Macron announced tonight.
“To guarantee the energy independence of France, to guarantee the supply of our country with electricity and to achieve our goals, especially carbon neutrality in 2050, we will start, for the first time in decades, the construction of nuclear reactors in “Our country and we will continue to develop renewable energy sources,” he said in a televised address.
The increase in cases is worrying
Referring to Covid-19, the French president said that the increase in cases and the number of hospitalizations due to Covid is worrying and called on all citizens to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
The booster dose of the vaccine will be mandatory in December for those over 65 so they can maintain their health pass, he said.
Macron called for speeding up booster vaccination for the elderly and vulnerable, and said a third dose would be given to people aged 50 to 64 from early December.
Macron warned of a fifth wave of infections in Europe and urged a small minority of unvaccinated French citizens to do so.
“Get vaccinated. Get vaccinated to protect yourself. Get vaccinated to live normally,” he said.
