The death toll in Madagascar from Cyclone Batsirai has risen to 111, the country’s Civil Protection Service announced.
The cyclone hit the Indian Ocean island on Saturday, leveling homes and power lines as it pounded the east coast. The storm receded late Sunday, leaving 91,000 people with homes destroyed or damaged.
According to the Civil Protection Service, 87 dead were found in the same area, Ikongo, in southeastern Madagascar, with authorities still collecting data on the extent of the disasters there.
Cyclone Batsirai was the second catastrophic storm in Madagascar in two weeks, following Cyclone Ana, which killed 55 people and displaced 130,000 in another part of the country.
The island nation, with a population of almost 30 million, was already experiencing food shortages in the south as a result of severe and prolonged drought.
The World Food Program (WFP) says Batsirai has worsened the situation by destroying rice, fruit and vegetable crops that took just two weeks to harvest.
