In an interview with CNN Unifesp International Relations professor Regiane Bressan said that the political-electoral crisis in Venezuela reached a new level with the intensification of the persecution of the opposition by the government of Nicolás Maduro.
The expert highlighted the complexity of the situation and its impacts on the country’s international relations.
The current scenario is marked by the asylum of the opposition presidential candidate, Edmundo González, in Spain, while the opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, remains in Venezuelan territory.
“The country’s situation is really very difficult for the international community, for the opposition and also for relations between Brazil and Venezuela,” said Bressan.
Escalation of tensions and diplomatic violations
The professor highlighted that Maduro “is on a major escalation against the opposition” and that his actions have challenged not only democratic tradition, but also international conventions.
One example cited was the expulsion of Argentine diplomats and the subsequent custody of the Argentine embassy by Brazil, a situation that surprised the Brazilian government.
Impacts on international relations
The actions of the Venezuelan regime have worried the international community.
The professor noted that “Nicolás Maduro has been breaking with democratic precepts and also with international treaties that provide protection, mainly for those who are politically persecuted.”
This stance, according to Bressan, “makes the relationship between the international community and Brazil and the Venezuelan government even more difficult.”
The situation calls into question not only Venezuela’s internal political stability, but also its position on the global diplomatic scene.
