Malaysian authorities have rescued hundreds of children and teenagers believed to be victims of physical and sexual abuse at the charities hosting them, and dozens of suspects have been arrested, police said. Inspector-General Razaruddin Hussain said a total of 402 children (201 girls and the same number of boys), aged between 1 and 17, were rescued during police operations at 20 institutions in Selangor and Negri Sebilan states today. Among the 170 arrested are some “ustaz”, i.e. teachers of the Islamic religion as well as guardians of these institutions.
