It was Oumar Touré, nephew of the one who was president of Mali for 10 years, from 2002 to 2012, who announced the news. “Amadou Toumani Touré died in the night from Monday to Tuesday in Turkey, where he was evacuated for health reasons,” he said, quoted by AFP. He was 72 years old. Amadou Toumani Touré had recently undergone “a heart operation at the Luxembourg hospital in Bamako that he created. Everything seemed to be going well, ”a doctor at the hospital said on condition of anonymity. “We then decided to evacuate him sanitarily. He traveled to Turkey very recently on a scheduled flight. Unfortunately, he passed away on the night of Monday to Tuesday, ”he added. As a reminder, Amadou Toumani Touré, nicknamed ATT, is the one who, after his successful coup against President Moussa Traoré in March 1991, initiated and accompanied the process towards more democracy in Mali.
A journey from Mopti to the head of state
Amadou Toumani Touré was born on November 4, 1948 in Mopti, in what is still French Sudan. After having attended what was called at the time the fundamental school, he intended for a career as a teacher by enrolling, between 1966 and 1969, at the secondary normal school of Badalabougou, in Bamako. Finally, it is a military trajectory that he takes by integrating the Combined Arms School of Kati, from which he leaves to enter the 33rd Regiment of Parachute Commandos. In 1984, after numerous internships in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and in France, he was already commander, battalion commander of his regiment.
The turning point in his life came in March 1991. After the popular demonstrations repressed in blood by President Moussa Traoré, he became a major player in the coup d’état which brought down the successor of the first president of Mali, namely Modibo Keïta. This is the moment when he takes the chairmanship of the Transition Committee for the Salvation of the People, which earned him the duties of Head of State during the transition to prepare for the establishment of democracy. As such, he organizes the National Conference. This was held from July 29 to August 12, 1991. Legislative and presidential elections were organized in 1992. A special moment which gave him the greatest prestige: at the end of the elections, he handed over power to the president elected, in this case Alpha Oumar Konaré. What lead to him being nicknamed the “soldier of democracy”. After this episode, he founded and ran a children’s foundation. Returned to business and elected president in 2002, then re-elected in 2007, Amadou Toumani Touré was, in turn, overthrown in March 2012 by a coup led by Captain Amadou Aya Sanogo.
