Malta: Restrictions are being tightened due to the increase in infections

Malta has announced tougher restrictions on COVID-19 as the number of coronavirus infections broke a new record for a second day.

Health Minister Chris Fern said events where it is not possible to have seating are prohibited from December 27, while sporting events must be held behind closed doors. All venues must be closed by 1.00 in the morning.

The celebration of the coming of the New Year in an open space in the capital Valletta, was canceled.

Fern said anyone aged 18 and over would be able to apply for a booster dose from Dec. 27, and vaccination certificates will be required to enter most venues from Jan. 17.

Vaccination rates in Malta exceed 90%, one of the highest in Europe.

It recorded today 733 new infections from the virus from 582 yesterday, Wednesday.

Fern said the first two infections from the Omicron variant have been identified, but added that he is confident it can be brought under control with booster doses.
