Malta has announced tougher restrictions on COVID-19 as the number of coronavirus infections broke a new record for a second day.

Fern said anyone aged 18 and over would be able to apply for a booster dose from Dec. 27, and vaccination certificates will be required to enter most venues from Jan. 17.
Vaccination rates in Malta exceed 90%, one of the highest in Europe.
It recorded today 733 new infections from the virus from 582 yesterday, Wednesday.
Fern said the first two infections from the Omicron variant have been identified, but added that he is confident it can be brought under control with booster doses.
