A man bled to death after being gored at a bullfighting festival in eastern Spain, officials said.
It was the first such accident in the country since events resumed, with Covid-19’s restrictions relaxing in recent months.
The 55-year-old man, who was not identified, was repeatedly attacked by the bull at the festival in the town of Onda, the city said on Saturday. Other participants tried to attract the animal, but without success.
The man died Saturday at a hospital in the nearby town of Villarreal after bleeding from a wound in his left thigh that punctured his artery, emergency services said. He was also injured in the head.
The Council of Onda canceled all other bullfights that were scheduled for the festival, which ended this Sunday. Other activities were not affected.
A public debate over the abolition of bullfighting has become more heated in recent years, and only a small number has occurred since Spain’s pandemic restrictions were lifted.
The animals released for the races are usually used later in bullfights, on the same day.
A 2020 survey by Electomania, a research firm, found that 46.7% of Spaniards favored banning bullfights; 34.7% did not support bullfights, but were against a legal prohibition, and 18.6% believed that they should be preserved.
