A 49-year-old man was arrested by the Military Police this Wednesday morning (29), suspected of participating in what the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) classified as one of the biggest bank robberies in the history of the country. During the incident, which took place in August 2011, at a branch on Avenida Paulista, a gang broke into 161 safes, stole jewelry, precious stones, documents and an estimated value of R$500 million.
The arrest of the suspect, who had an open arrest warrant, was based on an anonymous tip. Police officers stopped him on his way out of his residence and took him to the 72nd Police District, in Jardim Ondina.
He will remain imprisoned at the disposal of Justice, the SSP declared in a statement.
The theft took place at dawn between August 27th and 28th, 2011, and took around 10 hours. Neither the bank nor the customers specified all the subtracted objects.
