The upgraded position of Greece in the international energy map until 2030, was described by the President and CEO of IPTO Manos Manousakis, in an interview given to energypress.gr journalist Thodoris Panagoulis, in the context of the 3rd Power & GasForum.
Mr. Manousakis stressed that in the coming years, the country will have a denser network of domestic and international connections, “in order to meet its increased energy needs in the future, both through RES and through new, alternative energy sources.”
At the same time, it will have more modern and durable electrical infrastructure, shielding the Transmission System from the dangers of climate change.
Referring to the international energy crisis, which began, as he said, before the war in Ukraine, Mr. Manousakis stressed that “it is absolutely necessary to ensure energy adequacy for both Greece and the European continent as a whole.”
At least 25 GW of RES in the energy mix by 2030
Describing the energy “landscape” of Greece in 2030, Mr. Manousakis estimated that “with the rates we follow today, in 2030 we will have at least 25 GW of installed capacity from Renewable Sources, ie a very large percentage of the energy mix will be green and clean”.
He added that “the electrical system will be more durable, many of the large Substations will have integrated the new state-of-the-art closed type GIS technology and we will have completed the underwater connections of all the major Aegean islands with the mainland”.
The role of international connections is particularly important
The President of IPTO stressed the special importance of international interconnections for the enhancement of energy security and estimated that in 2030 the new international interconnections Greece-Italy, Greece-Cyprus-Israel and Greece-Egypt will be fully operational.
He also announced that the shareholder participation of both the Greece-Cyprus-Israel and the Greece-Egypt interconnection, which is maturing rapidly, is being considered “and the talks with the competent state and private bodies are proceeding in a very good atmosphere. “.
Finally, he reminded that:
• Greece’s interconnection with Bulgaria is in full swing,
• two new interconnections with Turkey and Albania are being studied
• The existing interconnection with Northern Macedonia will be upgraded.
Shielding of the System from extreme weather phenomena
“The acceleration of the climate crisis makes it necessary to strengthen the resilience and reliability of our infrastructure, in order to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity, which is considered a given in modern societies,” said the President of IPTO.
Mr. Manousakis referred to the antiquity of the infrastructure “both in Greece and in many European countries where most of the components of the System were built in the 1970s and 1980s” saying that:
• with the expanded Fixed Renewal Program, with a budget of 200 million euros, the Administrator will replace 60% of the existing components of the System with state-of-the-art equipment by 2026 and
• by the end of 2023, the modernization of the most critical High and Ultra High Voltage equipment will be completed.
