Marielle case: jury of middle-aged white men should not interfere in sentence, according to MP

During a speech at the trial of Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz, this Thursday morning (31), the Rio de Janeiro prosecutor, Fábio Vieira, commented on the composition of the popular jury formed to analyze the case.

According to his assessment, the group made up mostly of middle-aged, light-skinned men should be in favor of sentencing the defendants with the maximum sentence.

“I found the composition of the Jury very interesting. Most of them are “middle-aged”, light-skinned people. The women who were selected were dismissed,” said the MPRJ prosecutor.

“Many people may say: ‘look, this Jury is not heterogeneous, it is not showing a democracy based on color, race or anything’. I say the opposite: anyone, regardless of race, religion, party, will sit there, watch this process and come to the same conclusion”, he added.

Just yesterday (30), an hour before the trial, judge Lúcia Glioche drew the jurors. The only two women drawn were dismissed by the defendants’ lawyers.

Defense and prosecution could dismiss up to 3 people each, without the need for justification.

Prosecutor’s speech

In addition to Fábio Vieira, prosecutors Audrey Marjorie and Eduardo Martins were able to give explanations for up to 2 and a half hours at the beginning of this second day of the trial.

“It is undeniable that these facts will have repercussions not only in Rio de Janeiro, but universally”, highlighted Marjorie about the relevance of the case under analysis.

During his presentation, Eduardo Martins gave details about the crime and even showed research carried out by Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz on the internet before the murder. Research was shown on nannies, silencers and the region where the councilor would travel.

According to the prosecutor’s office, 14 shots hit the vehicle where the victims were. Four of them hit Marielle’s body. Driver Anderson Gomes was shot at more times than the councilor, which, according to the prosecutor, proves that the shooting continued.

“The decision was made to ‘sweep the car from one side to the other’ with the intention of killing everyone,” said Martins.

The exhibition also featured an audio sent by the only survivor of the attack, Marielle’s then advisor, Fernanda Chaves, in which she said, shortly after surviving the shots:

“Look, the car I was in with Marielle was hit by several shots. I don’t know what to do, stay at home, wait for me. Pray for me, Marielle and Anderson.”
