The extreme drought in the Amazon region left extensive damage to the Xingu River, in Pará. An image from the Amazon Institute of Man and Environment (Imazon) shows the impacts of severe drought on the river. The stretch captured by Imazon is close to the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, in the state of Pará.
Last September, the Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (Cemaden) stated that the country was suffering the worst drought since 1950, when the agency’s records began. The institute that released the images compared the Xingu River in September 2023 and September 2024 to show losses over 12 months.
See below:
According to Cemaden, it is the second consecutive year of extreme drought in Brazil. In September, almost 60% of the country was affected and some cities, including the capital Brasília, suffered from more than 140 consecutive days without rain .
Other rivers in the Amazon region also reached historic lows.
Also in September, the Solimões, one of the main tributaries of the mighty Amazon River, whose waters originate in the Peruvian Andes, fell to its lowest level ever recorded in Tabatinga, a Brazilian city on the border with Colombia.
In Rio Negro, the impacts were faster than the comparison made by Imazon. Images taken by the Manaus Turismo portal and provided to CNN show a section of the Rio Negro without water on 09/19/2024, after being full on 06/20/2024. See the photos here.
On October 4th, the Rio Negro reached the greatest drought in its history in more than 120 years of measurement. The Port of Manaus recorded a river level of 12.66 meters.
“The minimums in these rivers… are usually at the end of October,” said Adriana Cuartas, a researcher at Cemaden. This year, they happened earlier and water levels will continue to drop, she told CNN .
