Argentina’s Economy Minister and presidential candidate, Sergio Massa, agreed with his opponent Javier Milei and will leave the discussion on the 2024 Budget until after the October elections.
The announcement was made by Massa this Thursday (14) at a meeting in the city of La Rioja with more than a hundred businesspeople, after Milei sent a letter to the government last Monday (11) asking for a postponement.
The information was confirmed by the state news agency Télam, linked to the Ministry of Communications.
Other candidates criticize and say that the situation is an agreement between Massa and Milei, despite them representing opposing political camps, Kirchnerist left and extreme right respectively.
Despite the postponement of the debate, the government will send the budget bill to parliament this Friday (15), within the deadline established by the Financial Administration law, which sets September 15 as the maximum deadline.
The government authorities’ argument is that Milei’s request is reasonable because the next president must redesign his own budget, but without failing to comply with the law.
“It is logical that the 2024 Budget be presented this Friday and that it will be debated when it is known who will be the next president elected by the population at the polls”, sources from the Ministry of Economy told Télam.
The budget must establish resources, sources of financing and expenses that the national public administration will have available for the next year.
With triple-digit inflation, the country is facing a financial crisis that has been the main theme of electoral campaigns and should define the electoral result.
After being sent to parliament, the budget must be discussed by congressmen and voted on. The debate calendar should be analyzed next Tuesday (19).
