Matter Labs CEO Alex Gluchowski said the company was forced to make layoffs to “better align with evolving technology” and support the needs of zkSync (ZKSY) developers. The restructuring comes as the company needs to adapt and change its role in the decentralized ecosystem.
“The launch of Elastic Chain and ZK Nation was the right time to reassess our strategy, goals, and team composition. We did some planning, and it became clear that not all of our talents were fully aligned with our needs,” Glukhovsky wrote on social media.
Despite the layoffs, the CEO assured that Matter Labs remains financially sound. According to him, people who lost their positions will receive severance pay, including three months of base salary and ongoing health benefits. In addition, the company is ready to help laid-off employees with immigration issues and provide employment support for four months.
This year, Matter Labs withdrew its applications to register the ZK trademark after facing strong resistance from zero-knowledge proof advocates.
In 2023, Glukhovsky proposed that developers create a judicial system called the “Ethereum Supreme Court” that would resolve disputes in the DeFi community. Matter Labs later denied Polygon’s management’s accusations of copying source code from the Plonky2 library.
