Plot of “MaXXXine” and the legacy of its predecessors

“MaXXXine” will follow the ambitious Maxine, the sole survivor of a terror experienced in rural Texas – an event reported in “X”. She now makes her way to Los Angeles with the plan of becoming a famous actress of the 1980s. However, in addition to the hauntings of the past, the character will once again be pursued by a deadly obstacle, this time represented by a serial killer called the “Night Stalker”.

The story will also show Maxine’s fate, that is, whether the stardom desired in Hollywood will actually be achieved by the character.

Star cast

In addition to Mia Goth, the star-studded cast includes the singer Halsey and the actors Lily Collins (“Emily in Paris”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), Michelle Monaghan (“Mission Impossible”), Bobby Cannavale (“Welcome to the Neighborhood”), Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”) and Kevin Bacon (“Footloose”) adding to the story.

Reference to “Psychoce”

Already shown in the trailer, in the story Maxine will come across the “Bates Motel”, a famous lodging establishment portrayed in the series of the same name and in “Psycho”, a classic horror film from 1960. The two productions portray, in different ways, the life of Norman Bates, a real serial killer.

In the film, the hotel is part of the set where Maxine films her new movie. At first, the location seems to be nothing more than a mere decoration for the story. However, it ends up adding more to the story as it unfolds.

A mystery about the great villain

The trailer also introduces the killer “Night Stalker”. The name is well-known outside of fiction and has some overlap with “MaXXXie”. Widely known off-screen, it is a nickname for the killer Ricardo Leyva Muñoz Ramírez, an American criminal who carried out serial robberies, kidnappings, rapes and murders in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas of the United States between 1984 and 1985 – the same year and location in which “MaXXXine” will be set.

The killer even got a documentary miniseries on Netflix in 2021.

In the horror story, the criminal chases women in search of finding the great Maxine. The end of the story will bring answers as to why the serial killer has everything to do with the outcome of the young aspiring star.

Is it worth watching? Top reviews of “MaXXXine”

On Rotten Tomatoes, a website responsible for gathering the opinions of specialized critics, the film has a 75% approval rating.

The general critical consensus states that the film is “intoxicating with its maximum style, a little uneven but vibrant, that cuts through the heart of Hollywood with a stiletto.”

“Building on its predecessors, ‘MaXXXine’ tells us that the real monster is not a knife-wielding madman but ambition itself,” wrote Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times.

“It may be the weakest of the three, but that fact says less about the quality of this particular fetishization and more about the high standard that West and Goth have set in their previous chapters,” wrote Rolling Stone’s David Fear.

“Moving up a class in terms of casting, the film works best as an ode to the cinema and grime of 1980s Hollywood, and somewhat less as a mystery built around its dogged rising star,” said Brian Lowry of CNN in turn.

Will there be a new film about the story?

The idea of “MaXXXine” is, in fact, to end a trilogy started by “X”. However, in an interview with the North American website “The Playlist”, Ti West did not rule out the possibility of making another film about the universe.

“I think it would be interesting to step away from those movies, and then come back to them, because I’m very proud of them, and I think Mia is too. But I don’t want to say we couldn’t make another movie,” he stressed.

“Sometimes you can only take an idea so far. I always think the British version of ‘The Office’ is the best example. I would love to have more of that show, but part of the reason I love that show is because I still think about wanting more of it,” he concluded.
